Most common plumbing problems coming into winter

The Most Common Plumbing and Heating EmergenciesShare this article on StumbleUponShare this article on DeliciousShare this article on FriendFeedShare this article on DiggShare this article on RedditShare this article on Pinterest

As plumbing engineers in the Yorkshire region we have constantly been advising clients regarding ;
Below are the most common emergency situations we come across, especially now we are coming into winter:
1. Broken Water Pipes: You top priority, until the emergency plumber arrives on the scene is stop water flowing out of the leak in the pipe. The best way to do this is to find the main shut off valve to the house and close it. Turning off the valve will immediately stop the water supply to the fixtures and therefore stop the flood. Once you have stopped the situation getting any worse you then can call us at http://www.scarbrook.co.uk
2. Frozen Pipes: At the point at which water freezes it expands and this in turn leads to burst the pipes. If you notice that a pipe is frozen or is in a situation where it could easily become so, you can often prevent a plumbing disaster by taking action before the pipe thaws. Close the main water shut off valve in your house (we can help you find this if you don't know where the stopcock is). If the pipe has not split, the best advice is to warm it up SLOWLY and remember that thawing must be done gently. WARNING: never use a naked flame or torch to thaw a pipe. It can save you thousands of pounds and a great deal of misery if you check your pipework now that we are heading into winter.

3. Leaky Fixtures: Leaks can do more damage than you might imagine! Left over time a dripping pipe fitting can bring a ceiling down or cause plaster to come away from your wall. The best advice is to close the water stopcock valve leading to the leaky plumbing fixture. Then go ahead and check why you have a leak, it could be a faulty connection, old washer, hair or some debris has become lodged in the pipe. If you still cannot discover the source of the leak then that is the time to call the experts in!
4. Blocked Drains or Toilet systems: Probably one of the most dreaded problems on any homeowners list - unless this is something where you can see an obstruction there is a best course of action to call in the local plumber or drain company as quickly as you can. Chances are that any blockage may well not even be on your property and the council may have to become involved - better safe than sorry with this type of emergency!
5. Gas leaks: If you smell gas always immediately evacuate the building, dont wait or try to find the source of the leak - unless of course you have left the gas ring on the hob running - open all windows and doors and call the local gas supplier, you should also warn neighbors. Gas leaks do not lend themselves to do-it-yourself repairs due to their deadly nature in the wrong hands. Once outside the home call in an emergency plumber.
6. Broken Central Heating System: There are many different things that may cause your central heating or gas boiler to malfunction. There are many different components and factors to a boiler. If you are in need of hot water for your home or business, it is always best to call in Scarbrook Plumbing and Heating as soon as you know there is a problem. With winter now on the horizon it is our busiest period - people are running their systems often for the first time in a few months so this tends to be the point at which problems are discovered.

If you are looking for a new gas central heating boiler or full system, Scarbrook Plumbing and Heating cover the north of Engalnd and have vans running around the whole of Yorkshire and the North East. Check out or website at Scarbrook New Boilers Yorkshire

Scarbrook Plumbing and Heating – How to Bleed a Radiator

Step 1 Diagnosis

The only time you would bleed a radiator is if there is there is trapped air inside causing 'cold areas'.
Before attempting to bleed a radiator please note that it is very important to turn off the central heating system at the mains this will prevent more air leaking into the system.

2 Opening the Bleed Valve

Once you have assessed and diagnosed the problem and the solution is to bleed the radiator you then need to open the bleed valve, this is a small valve that is usually located down the side of the radiator located at the top.  If you cannot find a radiator key then a small spanner may do the job.

Placing a bowl or cloth underneath the valve when opening it will catch any escaped water from the system

3 Water flow

When the air releases it will eventually start to push out water with air bubbles, once the water is flowing with no air this is when to close the valve.

4 Analysis

(Please note it is better for the system to bleed all the radiators in the home than one)
When you have completed bleeding the radiators please remember to turn your central heating back on. Please leave for a 1- 2 hours before checking the entire surface area of the radiator. If the radiator is hot from top to bottom your problem is solved!

Please remember that if you are uncertain of any heating problems please give the excepts a call: 01302 882297

Common DIY Plumbing Mistakes

Attempting to fix a plumbing problem can cause a great deal of inconvenience and a loss of money.
Knowing which plumbing mistakes are the most common can help home owners decide whether or not to call in an expert.

Winter Pipes Preparation

Frozen pipes occur when pipes have not been insulated ready for winter. Ice forms inside the pipes and which causes damage and may promote waste overflow and flooding. To avoid this from happening make sure you prepare the pipes for the cols seasons.

DIY Without The Correct Information
Plenty of people take to Google t any sign of a plumbing fault. This may work for some however the overall outcome can be worse if you don’t know what you are doing. Self-diagnosis is extremely common and attempting to fix this can potentially end up costing more money.

Using the Wrong Materials
Using the wrong equipment and tool could end up costing you more money as you could damage something that isn’t broken. Professionals know how to diagnose the problem and the correct tools to fix it.

Doing Things in a Rush
Attempting to get the pipes running as fast as you can potentially be damaging, for example the use of harsh chemicals, a lot of people assume pouring the harshest chemical down their drain will fix the job but if the problem persists and chemicals are still being used to fix the problem it can cause severe damage to the pipes.

If you are having a problem with your plumbing or heating in the South Yorkshire area please give us a call.

Scarbrook - Main Reasons for Getting a New Boiler

If you suspect your boiler to be not working correctly or think it is losing its efficiency then it maybe time to call in the professionals. All of Scarbrook's engineers are gas safe registered. This blog will discuss the main reasons you should consider when upgrading your boiler.

= Increased Safety with a New Boiler - With the advances in technology new boilers have more safety features such as; automatic shut off valves and fail safe systems, hence it may pay to upgrade your dated boiler.

= Saving Money - This is one of the main draws for upgrading your existing boiler, its just the basic principle of offsetting the initial cost against the amount of money saved.  Potentially in the long term saving you a considerable percentage on your current energy bill.

= Environmentally Friendly - 'A' rated boilers are essential for all new domestic dwellings and the replacement of old ones. Reducing your carbon footprint by having a efficiency  86%  and higher.

= Reliability - New boilers are obviously going to be more reliable then their predecessor. This well therefore incur less maintenance cost and add to the appeal of installing a new boiler.

= Space Saver - From a design point of view it can help you create more space because new designs are less obtrusive and much smaller.

Dangers of a faulty boiler

A faulty boiler can be dangerous to anyone who does not have any experience of qualifications in the heating field.

It is a known fact that any system which heats up using gas or oil is high at risk giving off carbon monoxide if it is not serviced by a professional.

This silent killer has an estimated death ratio of 1 person per week in the United Kingdom. This is caused through lack of care and maintenance.

If you don’t already know gas can be extremely difficult to detect as it doesn't have a smell or taste. If you find yourself short of breath this could be a main indication of carbon monoxide poisoning. Some other symptoms include drowsiness, fatigue, nausea and headaches. The symptoms can be over a period of time or sudden depending on the leakage. It doesn’t take long for the carbon monoxide to enter the bloodstream once inhaled; this usually causes the person to go into a coma or even death.

If you are worried that your boiler may be faulty please check for these vital signs:

Flame is no longer blue (Burning yellow or orange)

Smoke/ soot stains appear above the boiler

Please make sure the room with holds your boiler is well ventilated and the boiler is kept under maintenance.
If you are worried that you may have any of these signs please give us a call, or if you would like to schedule a check-up.

Please not that Scarbrook is a part of the free boiler scheme provided by the government ( Green Deal). If you have any problems with your boiler and qualify for the green deal we could save you on the hassle and cost of a new boiler by providing you with one completely free of charge.

Scarbrook - Combination Boilers

Combination boilers, also known as combi boilers are basically a very effcient condensing boiler. These style of boilers are now the first choice of the vast majority of anyone installing a new one into their UK homes. The reason that they are so popular is in the name 'combination' because they combine heating up your water along with regulating the central heating system.

Scarbrook's fully qualified gas safe engineers only install trusted brands like Baxi, Vaillant, Ideal, Worcester etc.

Advantages for Choosing a Combi Boiler

A combi boiler differs slightly from standard types due to it does not require storing hot water - getting rid of the need for a hot water tank within an airing cupboard. Which is a lure for most looking to upgrade as it takes up less space and can make space available to develop a loft area into another room.

It is also ideal for families that require considerable amounts of hot water as it is on demand and doesn't run out. This type of boiler offers a great fail safe for when there is a change in water temperature whilst you are showering/bathing because of the thermostat controls.

The effciency of new boilers has to be classed as A grade inaccordance to the Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK (SEDUK) guidelines (with some exceptions). If you install a SEDUK A grade rated boiler then the energy efficiency is over 90% which will reduce your carbon footprint and increase the amount of money you save on your energy bill. In conjunction to this if your energy efficiency rating for your home is high it can add value to the property.

In general the boiler installation is much quicker as there is less to install due to the lack of water tank an extra pipe work.

Scarbrook install hundreds of combi boilers every year with fantastic customer satisfaction Click Here to see some of our testimonials

Disadvantages for Choosing a Combi Boiler

As with any product or system there are always disadvantages and this is not an exception. In order to have hot water on demand there needs to be sufficient water supply to the premises. Otherwise if there are multiple taps running simultaneously pressure from each outlet will suffer, however this is also depending on the power out put of the combi boiler. If the water supply is unreliable then this is not the ideal boiler for that situation.

Not particulary a disadvantage but as with every boiler it is a good idea to have it serviced regulary to keep it running smoothly and effciently.
Scarbrook is based in Doncaster and services mainly with in the Yorkshire region. Get in contact with us today for a FREE NO obligation quote.
